Structural engineering. Structural systems Structural engineering Structural engineering is the field of civil engineering particularly concerned with the design of complex structural systems. In a practical sense, structural engineering is largely the application of Newtonian mechanics to the design of structural elements and systems, such as buildings, bridges, walls (including retaining walls), dams, tunnels, etc. The job of structural engineers Structural engineers ensure that their designs satisfy a given design intent predicated on safety (i.e. structures do not collapse without due warning) and on serviceability (1.e. floor vibration and building sway are not uncomfortable to occupants). In addition, structural engineers are responsible for making efficient use of funds and materials to achieve these over-arching goals. Typically, entry-level structural engineers may design simple beams, columns and floors of a new building, including calculating the loads on each member and the load capacity of various building materials (steel, timber, masonry, concrete). An experienced engineer would tend to render more complex structures, considering physics of moisture, heat and energy inside the building components. I Structural loads I Structural loads on structures are generally classified as live loads such as the weight of the occupants and furniture in а building, the forces of wind or weight of water, the forces due to seismic activity such as earthquake, dead loads including the weight of the structure itself and all major architectural components and live roof loads such as material and manpower loading the structure during construction. Simple building systems The simplest building system consists of only two components. One component is a floor. A flat, horizontal surface on which human activities can take place. The other component is an enclosure that extends over the floor and generally also around it to provide shelter from the weather for human activities. The floor may be a structural deck laid on the ground or supported above ground on structural members such as joists and walls. Use of deck and structural members adds at least two different types of components, or two subsystems, to the simplest building system. Also, the enclosure over the floor requires supports, such as the rafter and walls, which, in turn, are seated on foundations in the ground. Additionally, footings are required at the base of foundations to spread the load over a large area of the ground to prevent the building from sinking. Consequently, even a slight improvement in a building introduces numerous additional subsystems into a building. Major subsystems generally include structural framing and foundations, enclosure systems, plumbing, lighting, acoustics, safety systems, vertical-circulation elements, electric power and signal systems, HVAC. I Superstructure and substructure I The portion of a building that extends above the ground level outside it is called the superstructure. The portion below the outside ground level is called the substructure. The parts of the substructure that distribute building loads to the ground are known as foundations. Foundations may take the form of walls. The superstructure structural system should be designed to transmit its loads to the foundation system in the manner anticipated in the design of foundations. Variety of beams In most buildings, the superstructural system consists of floor and roof decks, horizontal members that support them, and vertical members that support the other components. The horizontal members are generally known as beams, but they also are called by different names in specific applications. For example: Joists are closely spaced to carry light loads. Stringers support stairs. Purlins are placed horizontally to carry level roof decks. Rafters are placed on an incline to carry sloping roof decks. Girts are light horizontal members that span between columns to support walls. Girders may be heavily loaded beams or horizontal members that support other beams. Lintels are light horizontal beams that support walls at floor levels or carry part of walls above openings for doors and windows. I Major building systems I

"Match the paragraphs of the text in logical order. What People Want From Work: Motivation Whatever your personal reasons for working, the bottom line, however, is that almost everyone works for money. Whatever you call it: compensation, salary, bonuses, benefits or remuneration, money pays the bills. Money provides housing, gives children clothing and food, sends teens to college, and allows leisure activities, and eventually, retirement. Unless you are independently wealthy, you need to work to collect a paycheck. "Summarising, it can be said that employers need to start asking their employees what they want from work and whether they are getting it. Surprisingly, there are so many simple and inexpensive opportunities to create a motivational, desirable work environment. It"s not only "employee"s task to make the work environment friendly, but also management"s. If people work together they"ll achieve awesome business success. Others truly love what they do or the clients they serve. Some like the camaraderie and interaction with customers and coworkers. Other people like to fill their time with activity. Some workers like change, challenge, and diverse problems to solve. As you can see, employee motivation is individual and diverse. Every individual person has different motivations for working at a job. The reasons for working are as individual as the person. But, all people work because the workplace provides something that you need from work. The something that you obtain from your work impacts your morale, your motivation, and the quality of your life. Some people work for their love of the work; others work for personal and professional fulfilment. Other people like to accomplish goals and feel as if they are contributing to something larger than themselves, something important, an overarching vision for what they can create. Except for money, in a "Workforce" article, "The Ten Ironies of Motivation," reward and recognition guru, Bob Nelson, says, "More than anything else, employees want to be valued for a job well done by those they hold in high esteem." He adds that people want to be treated as if they are adult human beings who think, make decisions, try to do the right thing, and don"t need a caretaker watching over their shoulders. Furthermore, to belong to the in-crowd creates motivation: including items such as receiving timely information and communication; understanding management"s formulas for decision making; team and meeting participation opportunities; and visual documentation and posting of work progress and accomplishments. Also, itis found that a disconnect continues to exist between what employers think people want at work and what people say they want for motivation. Employers far underrate the importance to employees of such things as flexible work schedules or opportunities for advancement in their decision to join or leave a company. +
